Welcome to VDOT's "Bedford 2020 Transportation Plan" study web site. The study was conducted to provide long term needs assessment for the city's thoroughfare highway system. The boundaries of the study area are the corporate limits of the City of Bedford. The following roadway segments were evaluated:

  • South Street from the South Corporate Limit to Main Street
  • Peaks Street from North Bridge Street to the North Corporate Limit
  • Burks Hill Road from the South Corporate Limit to Route 460 Bypass
  • Crenshaw Street from Route 460 Bypass to West Main Street
  • Independence Boulevard from East Main Street to Longwood Avenue
  • Longwood Avenue from Independence Boulevard to the North Corporate Limit
  • North Bridge Street from East Main Street to Peaks Street
  • South Bridge Street from Washington Street to East Main Street
  • Longwood Avenue from Peaks Street to Forest Road
  • Forest Road from Longwood Avenue to the East Corporate Limit
  • Blue Ridge Avenue from West Corporate Limit to Route 460 Bypass West
  • Bedford Bypass from Blue Ridge Avenue to East Corporate Limit
  • West Main Street from Route 460 Bypass West to North Bridge Street
  • East Main Street from North Bridge Street to Route 460 Bypass East
  • 4th Street from West Main Street to Peaks Street
  • Bedford Avenue from 4th Street to North Bridge Street
  • Dawn Drive from Park Street to Independence Boulevard
  • Grove Street from Orange Street to Jackson Street
  • Jackson Street from North Bridge Street to Grove Street
  • Link Road from Route 460 Bypass to the South Corporate Limit
  • McGhee Street from Forest Road to Orange Street
  • Oakwood Street from Whitfield Drive to Longwood Avenue
  • Orange Street from East Main Street to the East Corporate Limit
  • Otey Street from North Bridge Street to South Street (including Otey Street Extended from North Bridge Street to East Main Street)
  • Park Street from Longwood Avenue to Dawn Street
  • Talbott Street from Otey Street to South Street
  • Washington Street from West Main Street to Otey Street
  • Whitfield Road from Peaks Street to Oakwood Street

Data collected for the study of the town includes:

  • Traffic counts conducted in July 1999
  • Accident report information from 1996 through 1998
  • VDOT database of roadway geometric conditions (dimensions)
  • Review of tourism and goods movement issues in the City

The above information was analyzed to identify Bedford's 2020 transportation needs based upon highway capacity, geometry, and safety as well as other concerns raised by local officials and citizens. A public meeting was held January 8, 2002 from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM at the Bedford Municipal Building, 215 East Main Street to present the study findings and seek input on the recommendations proposed for future improvements. The Bedford 2020 Transportation Plan was adopted by the City on February 12, 2002.
