Project Details
This project replaces the Main Street Bridge (Route 60) over Smith Creek in the Town of Clifton Forge, Alleghany County. The project is approximately 161-feet long with minimum approach work.
Currently Main Street is one way at this location consisting of two 11-foot westbound travel lanes and one 11-foot, six-inch wide lane for street side parking. Sidewalks measuring eight-feet to nine-feet wide are on each side of the road.
The current superstructure, which consists of the deck and all elements of the bridge that rest on the piers, is cast-in-place concrete and sits on nine multicolumn piers. The width is fixed at approximately 51-feet, six-inches due to existing buildings constructed adjacent to each side of the bridge.
The proposed new bridge will be in the same location as the existing bridge and will match the same width as the old structure due to existing buildings located next to the bridge..
The new bridge will have three spans with the deck consisting of prestressed concrete slab spans or box beams. There will be two 11-foot travel lanes with no shoulders and a single lane measuring 11-feet, six-inches for street side parking. New sidewalks approximately nine-feet wide will be built on both sides of the bridge.
Other elements of the project include protecting the adjacent buildings, minimum approach road work, utility relocations, minimizing or eliminating temporary right of way relocations, storm water management, storm drainage, hydraulic analysis and the preparation and acquisition of water quality permits.
The current average daily traffic volume is 4900 vehicles. Of this figure two percent is truck traffic.
The total estimated cost for this project is $6,292,000 with $781,000 for preliminary engineering, $718,000 for right of way activities, and $4,793,000 for construction. This is a design-build project.

Benefits of Project
The purpose is to replace a deteriorating bridge which has reached the end of its useful life. Benefits include safety to the traveling public and a replacement bridge compatible with the proposed Clifton Forge downtown revitalization master plan.
Design Plan Approval
Design plans were approved by the VDOT Chief Engineer Malcolm T. Kerley, P.E. in May 2010. This is for design plans regarding the Main Street (Route 60) Bridge over Smith Creek in Alleghany County.
During Construction
The project location and construction is designed to protect the existing buildings at this site. Water quality will be maintained through a permitting process.
Traffic Alerts
Work is beginning on the Smith Creek Bridge replacement project on Main Street (Route 60) in the Town of Clifton Forge.
From August 15, 2011 to September 15, 2011 at West Ridgeway Street (Route 60/220) and Commercial Avenue there will be traffic signal work. This work will take place Monday to Thursday each week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Motorists should be alert for shoulder closures on Commercial Avenue and on Route60/220, which will limit parking.
From September 19, 2011 to October 12, 2011 there will be bridge construction. Main Street will be closed between Route 60/220 and Commercial Avenue. Motorists can follow detour signs through the area using Business Route 60 and West Ridgeway Street.
