Project Details

This project replaces the Cowpasture River Bridge on Route 633 (McKinney Hollow Road) in Alleghany County. The project is 0.32-mile long and is located about a half mile south of Route 634. It is adjacent to the Jefferson National Forest.

Route 633 is a narrow road consisting of two eight-foot lanes with narrow shoulders and narrow ditches. The road crosses a single-lane steel truss bridge over the Cowpasture River. The bridge is deteriorating and has reached the end of its lifespan and needs to be replaced. The truss bridge is approximately 15-feet wide.

This truss bridge is eligible for the Register of National Historic Structures. It was built in 1900 and reconstructed in 1948. It is currently 109 years old. The bridge will be left in place next to the proposed bridge.

The proposed new bridge will be located 60-feet upstream from the existing bridge. The proposed bridge is about 340-feet long. The new bridge will have three spans and its deck will feature steel girder construction. The bridge will have two 10-foot lanes with three foot shoulders on each side.

The average daily traffic in 2006 was 350 vehicles per day. In 2031 the average daily traffic volume is anticipated to increase to 650 vehicles per day.

This project is funded with a combination of state and federal funds. The estimated cost for preliminary engineering is $505,000, for right of way is $164,296 and for construction is $2,799,908. The total estimate is $3,469,204.

What’s Next

A public hearing was held March 10, 2010. The right of way acquisition process began in early 2011 and has been completed. The project was advertised for construction on October 11, 2011. Construction will begin in the spring of 2012 and will finish in the spring of 2013.

This project replaces a deteriorating and obsolete bridge. This project also improves driver visibility, and improves the curvature of the approaches to the bridge.

During Construction

Two lanes of traffic will be maintained during the project with the exception of occasional flagging operations. Access to all private residences and businesses will be maintained throughout the project’s duration.
