Project Details

This project replaces the bridge over Cowardin Run on Route 687 (Jackson River Turnpike) in Bath County.

The project is located Route 687, one-half mile north of Route 618.

The existing traffic count is 600 vehicles per day and projected to be 730 vehicles per day in 2035.

The existing roadway leading up to the bridge is two lanes, with 16-foot wide pavement with an asphalt concrete surface. The existing bridge, built in 1932, is a single 44-foot steel-girder span with a concrete deck and has 24-foot clear width. The bridge is classified as structurally deficient.

Structurally deficient does not mean that a structure is in danger of imminent failure, but that its condition has deteriorated to a point where it should be replaced, and/or it can no longer carry today’s heavier truck loads, and is therefore posted.

The existing bridge has signs posted for 17 tons, meaning vehicles over this weight cannot use the bridge.

The existing bridge will be replaced with a new, two-lane structure in approximately the same location as the existing structure. The proposed bridge will be a single 45-foot pre-stressed box beam span with 27.5-foot clear width.

No roadway improvements other than the immediate approaches to the bridge will be part of this project. The project length will be approximately 0.1-mile.

No separate bicycle or pedestrian accommodations are provided for this project.

The total estimated cost for this project is $936,841 with $186,908 for preliminary engineering, $20,000 for right of way activities, and $729,933 for construction.

What’s Next

Project plans approved – Fall 2011
Right of way activities – Fall 2011
Construction – Fall 2013

Benefits of Project

This project replaces a structurally deficient bridge with a two-lane structure. The existing bridge cannot support heavier vehicles.  The new bridge can support the weight of modern day vehicles and traffic.

During Construction

The bridge will be closed during construction. A temporary traffic detour using a single lane 12-foot wide causeway down stream will be provided during the construction of the new bridge. The traffic will be controlled for the diversion by stop and proceed signs.
