Project Details
Reconstruction of the North Fork Bridge in the Front Royal area of Warren County. The bridge is located on Route 340/522 just outside the Front Royal town limits and spans the North Fork of the Shenandoah River and the Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks. In 2004 the traffic count for this portion of Route 340/522 was 25,000 vehicles per day. The construction project will replace the existing three-lane bridge with a new five-lane structure that will include bike lanes in both the northbound and southbound directions. Sidewalks will also be part of the bridge project.
Portions of the existing bridge substructure will remain in place and be used in conjunction with the new construction improvements. Existing water and sewer faculties owned by the Town of Front Royal will be adjusted during construction.
The approaches to the bridge will include dual north and southbound through lanes and will have turn lanes at adjacent connections and entrances. The Route 55 intersection will also be reconstructed. In 2004 Route 55 at this location served 8,500 vehicles per day.
Signals will be installed at the Route 55 intersection and at the Duck Street intersection.
River traffic during construction will have access to a canoe portage, which will be constructed on the south bank of the river. Signs will assist river traffic in this area.
