Project Details

This project replaces the bridge over Naked Creek on Route 603 (Fleeburg Road) in Page County. The project is located at the Route 609 intersection at the Page and Rockingham County line.

The Route 603 and the existing bridge have two nine-foot lanes with the roadway also featuring narrow shoulders and ditches. The current bridge is 24-feet wide and is deteriorating. This bridge has a weight limit restriction. At the end of its lifespan, this bridge needs to be replaced.

The new bridge will be built in the same location and will be 28-feet wide. There will be two 11-foot travel lanes with three-foot shoulders on the bridge.  The immediate approaches to the bridge will have two 11-foot lanes with five-foot shoulders. No roadway improvements other than the immediate approaches to bridge will be part of this project.

In 2008 the average daily traffic volume for Route 603 was 845 vehicles-per-day. This number is anticipated to increase to 1400 vehicles-per-day in the year 2034.

This project is funded with a combination of state and federal funds.  The total estimated cost for this project is $2.37 million, which includes $359,000 for preliminary engineering, $115,000 for right of way activities, and $1.9 million for construction.

What’s Next

A public hearing will be held in the spring of 2010.  The right of way acquisition process is scheduled in the fall of 2010.  It is anticipated the project will be advertised for construction in the fall of 2012.

Construction should begin in the spring of 2013 and will be complete in the summer of 2014.

Benefits of Project

Safety will be enhanced by replacing a deteriorating bridge that is at the end of its life-span. The new bridge will be a wider structure that meets modern traffic standards.

During Construction

Two lanes of traffic will be provided throughout the duration of the project with the possible exception of occasional flagging operations.  Access to all private residences and businesses will be maintained throughout the duration of the project.  A detour with a temporary bridge down stream will be provided during the construction of the new bridge.

Design Approval

Design plans were approved by VDOT Chief Engineer Malcolm T. Kerley, P.E. in May 2010.  This is for design plans regarding the Route 603 (Fleeburg Road) Naked Creek Bridge replacement in Page County.
