The purpose of this project is to replace the Route 850 (West Midland Trail) structure over Kerrs Creek in Rockbridge County. The project is 1.32 miles west of the intersection with Route 629 and 1.52 miles east of intersection of Route 633. The project length is approximately 0.01 miles.
The bridge that carries Route 850 over Kerrs Creek was constructed in 1927 with a reinforced concrete deck. Proposed improvements include a new 35-foot-wide concrete-frame bridge and minor modifications to the roadway approaches to accommodate the wider bridge. Construction is scheduled for late 2016.
Route 850 is classified as a rural major collector. The existing bridge has an average traffic count of 239 vehicles per day as of 2013, and a projected count of 372 vehicles per day for the design year of 2037.
The estimate for the project is $1,106,760 with $201,491 for preliminary engineering, $45,000 for right-of-way and utilities, and $860,269 for construction.

Benefits of Project
This project replaces an existing substandard, structurally deficient bridge on a state-maintained route that serves county residents. If not replaced the existing bridge will continue to deteriorate and would eventually have to be closed to vehicular traffic.
Temporary traffic signal controlled vehicles from March 2017 through October 2017, when bridge replacement was completed. No detour was required.
