The Office of Intermodal Planning and Investment

The Office of Intermodal Planning and Investment is located within the Office of the Secretary of Transportation and was created in 2002 to encourage the coordination of multimodal and intermodal planning across the various transportation modes within the commonwealth.

The goals of the office are to provide solutions that:

  • Link existing systems
  • Reduce congestion
  • Improve safety, mobility, and accessibility
  • Provide for greater travel options

The office also develops reports and tools to measure the performance of the transportation system.

Major accomplishments of the Office of Intermodal Planning and Investment include:

  • Coordination of development of a Statewide Multimodal Freight Study (to be completed 2009)
  • Coordination of the Multimodal Grant Program (ongoing)
  • Coordination of the Governor’s Transportation Accountability Commission (2007)
  • Coordination with the Freight Advisory Committee (2006-2008)
  • Development of the Virginia’s Transportation Performance Report (2006, 2007 and 2008)
  • Development of the VTrans2025 Action Plan (2005)
  • Coordination of development of VTrans2025, Virginia’s long-range multimodal transportation plan (2004)

The update to the long-range plan, VTrans2035, is under way. VTrans2035 will examine pressing transportation issues across the state and identify strategies to improve mobility on critical statewide corridors.
