Safety Rest Area:

The new New Kent Rest Area opened Aug. 28, 2003. It replaced the old complex, which was built in 1976.

Designed and built by the W.C. English Co., the new facility's architecture keeps with the traditional colonial style commonly used throughout this historic region.

It features an 11,000 square-foot building with restrooms, an indoor vending area and an enclosed lobby. There is also a Virginia State Police office.

The facility has a security monitoring system and ample lighting. A children's play area, and picnic and pet areas are available, as is travel and traffic information.

Work is under way to open a traveler information center in the New Kent East Safety Rest Area. This center will open this summer.

We are open 24 hours per day, 365 days a year. This facility is open to all vehicles.
