BRIDGE REPLACEMENT SLATED FOR RT. 629 IN RAPPAHANNOCK
Single lane closed May 2 to June 2; road to be completely closed May 10 and 19

CULPEPER — Route 629 (Bean Hollow Road) in Rappahannock County will be reduced to one lane for one month beginning Monday, May 2. A crew with the Virginia Department of Transportation will replace a structurally-deficient bridge over the Jordan River, which is located 0.1 mile west of Route 628 (Dearing Road) and about 2.3 miles from the road’s end.

On May 10 and May 19 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the bridge will be closed to all vehicular traffic while a crane places pre-cast concrete slabs for the bridge’s deck. Limited pedestrian access will be available during both single-day closures.

Stop signs will be placed at either end of the bridge to control two-way traffic during the single lane closure. Motorists should obey all traffic controls and be alert for workers and equipment near the open travel lane, which will be narrowed to about 9 feet.

The timber-deck bridge, built in 1961, is currently posted with a 14-ton weight limit. The upcoming work involves replacing the bridge with a structure that can carry all legal-weight vehicles.
