BURNLEY STATION RD. CLOSED MARCH 14 FOR BRIDGE WORK
Motorists should use posted detour from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

CULPEPER — Route 641 (Burnley Station Road) in Albemarle County will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, March 14 for emergency repairs to the bridge that spans Norfolk Southern Railroad.

During the closure, eastbound traffic will be detoured via Route 644 (Burnley Road) to Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) to Route 20 (Stony Point Road) and back to Route 641. Westbound traffic will reverse the detour.

The Virginia Department of Transportation recently assumed ownership of the bridge from Norfolk Southern Railroad. Significant deterioration to the bridge’s beams was found during VDOT’s first safety inspection, prompting a weight reduction from 15 to 3 tons on Feb. 17. The repairs scheduled for Monday are necessary to maintain the 3-ton posting.

Approximately 1,100 vehicles cross the bridge every day.

VDOT has an aggressive bridge inspection and safety program that goes beyond federal requirements. Inspections of Virginia’s 20,900 bridges and other structures are done in accordance with National Bridge Inspection Standards by qualified inspectors.
