FOUR-WAY STOP COMING TO FAUQUIER CO. INTERSECTION
New traffic pattern aims to improve safety at Midland Road and Elk Run Road
CULPEPER — The Virginia Department of Transportation will install a new all-way stop at the intersection of Route 610 (Midland Road) and Route 806 (Elk Run Road) in Fauquier County on Aug. 31 to improve safety for the traveling public.
The new traffic pattern will require motorists in both directions of Route 806 and Route 610 to come to a complete stop before continuing, one at a time, through the intersection. Previously, motorists on Route 806 could proceed through the intersection without interruption while those on Route 610 wait at stop signs.
The work involves adding stop signs and painting stop bars on the pavement in both directions of Route 806. Additionally, “stop ahead” signs will be installed at each of the four approaches to inform motorists of the upcoming intersection.
During the daytime work, traffic will be directed through the intersection by flagging. Motorists should approach the intersection with caution and obey all traffic controls.
Message boards are in place to notify motorists of the change.
As a reminder to motorists, Virginia law gives the right-of-way to the first vehicle to arrive at a four-way stop. In the event that vehicles are stopped at two or more roadway approaches, the driver on the right has the right-of-way. This generally leads to a clockwise traffic pattern.
