PAYNES MILL RD. BRIDGE TO CLOSE APRIL 7
Four-month VDOT project will replace posted structure over Cub Creek

CULPEPER — Work is soon to begin on the project that will replace the Route 601 (Paynes Mill Road) bridge over Cub Creek in Louisa County.

Virginia Department of Transportation contractor Crossroads Bridge Inc. of Marion was awarded the $725,000 project last October. Their work will include removing the existing timber-deck bridge, built in 1974, which is posted at a 22-ton weight limit, and replacing it with a concrete bridge capable of carrying all legal loads.

The Route 601 bridge will be closed to traffic Thursday, April 7 through its fixed completion date of Aug. 26. Detour signs will direct northbound motorists to Route 522 (Cross County Road) to Route 648 (Gardners Road) to Route 658 (Jackson Road) and back to Route 601. Southbound motorists will reverse the detour. Access will be maintained to all private entrances.

According to a 2014 count, about 650 vehicles use this portion of Route 601 daily.
