RT. 29 SOLUTIONS LANE CLOSURES
Scheduled activities: Week of May 23-27, 2016
CHARLOTTESVILLE — The following work is scheduled, weather permitting, on the Route 29 corridor in Albemarle County and the city of Charlottesville during the upcoming week. Speed limits may be reduced and traffic movements may be restricted within highway work zones.
(NEW) or (UPDATE) indicate revisions since last week’s report.
(UPDATE) Route 29/250 Bypass interchange – All new ramp lanes from Route 29 south to Route 250 Bypass east are open. Occasional lane closures will be in place for finishing work, including the installation of pavement markings and raised pavement markers. Motorists should be alert for equipment entering and exiting the highway.
- Sunday, May 22 from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., the two right lanes on Route 29 south will be closed from Hydraulic Road to Route 250 and the ramp to Route 250 Bypass will be closed with a detour in place for motorists. The Route 250 Bypass westbound right lane will be closed from Hydraulic Road to Barracks Road.
- Monday from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., the two left lanes on Route 29 south will be closed from Hydraulic Road to the Route 250 Bypass.
- Tuesday from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., the two left lanes on Route 29 north will be closed from Morton Street to Hydraulic Road.
- Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the ramp lanes from Route 29 south to Route 250 Bypass will be narrowed with a right shoulder closure in place. The ramp from Barracks Road to Route 250 Bypass east will be narrowed with a right shoulder closure in place. Motorists will be required to stop before merging into the travel lanes. The right lane on Route 250 Bypass east will be closed from Barracks Road to Route 29.
(UPDATE) Rio Road grade-separated intersection – Major construction on the project will begin at 8 p.m. Sunday, May 22. Through September 2 the following traffic patterns will be in effect:
On Route 29 north and south of the Rio Road intersection:
- Between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m., there will be two lanes southbound and three lanes northbound
- Right turns onto Rio Road will be permitted at all times
- No left turns at the intersection at any time
- Between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. there will be at least one lane open both northbound and southbound
- All business entrances will remain open during business hours
On Rio Road east and west of Route 29:
- Traffic on Rio Road will not be able to cross Route 29
- Right turns onto Route 29 will be permitted at all times
- No left turns at the intersection at any time
- All business entrances will remain open during business hours
Posted detour routes during the construction are Berkmar Drive to Woodbrook Drive or Hilton Heights Drive, and Hillsdale Drive to Branchlands Boulevard.
Route 29 widening – Median grading, utility relocation and storm-drain installation continues from Polo Grounds Road to Towncenter Drive. Sunday through Friday between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., there may be intermittent single lane closures on Route 29 between Towncenter Drive and Rio Mills Road during construction operations. Motorists should remain alert and use caution through the work zone.
Berkmar Drive Extended – Construction of bridge abutments north and south of the South Fork Rivanna River and clearing and grading along the roadway alignment continues. Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., Rio Mills Road may be reduced to one lane with traffic controlled by flaggers during construction activities. On Towncenter Drive in the vicinity of the roundabout, motorists should be alert for dump trucks and other equipment entering and exiting the roadway.
