Rt. 609 BRIDGE WILL CLOSE FOR REPLACEMENT SEPT. 26
VDOT will replace the Louisa Co. bridge; motorists detoured

CULPEPER — The Virginia Department of Transportation will close the Route 609 (Buckner Road) bridge over Long Creek in Louisa County for approximately eight weeks for replacement.

The bridge, located 0.9 mile north of Route 648 (Jouett School Road) and 1.2 miles south of Route 612 (Halls Store Road), will be closed beginning Sept. 26. Weather permitting, the road is expected to reopen to traffic Nov. 18.

A posted detour route will direct southbound motorists west on Route 612, then left on Route 33 (Jefferson Highway) and left on Route 648, which carries traffic back to Route 609. Northbound traffic will reverse the detour. Driveway access will be maintained for local traffic.

The existing Long Creek bridge, which was built in 1965, is approximately 17 feet wide and is posted with a 12-ton weight restriction. The new superstructure will be about 20 feet wide and rated for legal loads.

The bridge carries approximately 585 vehicles daily, according to a 2014 traffic count.

Message boards will be in place to notify the public of the closure.
