RT. 628 BRIDGE REPLACEMENT BEGINS OCT. 17
VDOT will replace the Rappahannock County bridge; motorists detoured
CULPEPER — The Virginia Department of Transportation will close the Route 628 (Fodderstack Road) bridge over the Rush River in Rappahannock County for approximately four weeks for replacement.
The bridge, located 0.4 mile north of Route 1101 (Gay Street) and 3.8 miles from Route 606 (Fodderstack Road), will be closed beginning Oct. 17. Weather permitting, the road is expected to reopen to traffic on Nov. 11.
A posted detour route will direct northbound motorists east on Route 211 Business (Warren Avenue), then left on Route 211 (Lee Highway) and left on Route 522 (Zachary Taylor Highway), which carries traffic back to Fodderstack Road. Northbound traffic will reverse the detour. Driveway access will be maintained for local traffic.
The existing Rush River bridge, which was built in 1958, is posted with a 12-ton weight restriction. The existing timber deck superstructure will be replaced. After construction, the bridge will be open to all legal-weight vehicles.
The bridge carries approximately 334 vehicles daily, according to a 2014 traffic count.
Message boards will be in place to notify the public of the closure.
