TRAFFIC SHIFT AT ROUTE 15/53 ROUNDABOUT PROJECT NOV. 2
Motorists should drive with caution, watch for highway workers.
CULPEPER — A new traffic pattern will take effect Wednesday, Nov. 2 in Fluvanna County on Route 53 (Thomas Jefferson Parkway) at Route 15 (James Madison Highway) as part of the Route 15/53 roundabout construction project.
The existing right-turn lane on Route 53 eastbound will be closed and traffic will be shifted left as construction of the roundabout continues. Motorists should use caution and obey traffic controls.
Approximately 6,600 vehicles use Route 15 daily, according to 2015 data. The traffic count on Route 53 is 5,200 vehicles per day.
Under a $1.7 million contract, Virginia Department of Transportation contractor Haley, Chisholm and Morris, Inc. is replacing the existing intersection with a roundabout that will include enhanced street lighting and a shared-use path for pedestrians and bicyclists. Work on the Route 15/53 roundabout project began in September and is expected to be completed in August 2017.
