CULPEPER (4 p.m.) — Virginia Department of Transportation crews will continue snow-removal operations overnight Tuesday and Wednesday morning. The initial pass to open all state-maintained roads has been completed in the Culpeper District and crews are now returning to open the roads to their full width. Other roads that have already been cleared still require additional plowing to expose shoulders and turn lanes, and piles of snow must be removed from intersections.

Temperatures should remain above freezing for most of the district tonight, which will aid melting but may leave water ponding on road surfaces. Motorists should continue to drive with caution since that water, as well as ice and hard-packed snow on some secondary roads, can cause a loss of control. There are still many areas where sidewalks have not been cleared and pedestrians are walking in the roadway, requiring extra vigilance from motorists.

Decreased sight distances due to high snow piles at intersections and private entrances also present a safety hazard. Once VDOT completes plowing, crews will begin removing snow from those locations to improve the sight distances.
