Traffic Changes at I-66 and Route 123 Interchange Starting On or About This Friday, Jan. 24
(RESCHEDULED FOR 1/28/20) Ramps from I-66 West to Route 123 North and South changing as part of Transform 66 Project
UPDATE: Traffic change is now planned for the night of Tuesday, Jan. 28, with demolition to begin Wednesday, Jan. 29)
FAIRFAX – Two traffic changes are planned for the I-66 West exit to north and southbound Route 123/Chain Bridge Road (Exit 60) beginning on or about this Friday night, Jan. 24, to accommodate reconstruction of the interchange, which will include future access to the I-66 Express Lanes.
- Drivers exiting to Route 123 North toward Oakton will be shifted from the current temporary ramp to the new, permanent northbound ramp;
- Drivers exiting to Route 123 South toward the City of Fairfax will be shifted to the temporary ramp, where two left-turn lanes and a traffic signal will allow access to Route 123 South.
Following this traffic pattern change, the current ramp from I-66 West to Route 123 South will be demolished to allow construction of new ramps. Demolition will occur during daytime hours, when possible. Demolition of the ramp over I-66 will occur during overnight hours when traffic lanes can be closed for the safety of the traveling public. Additional information about demolition and traffic closures will be provided ahead of these overnight activities.
Construction-related detours, and temporary and permanent traffic changes, will continue at the Route 123 interchange through 2022 when the new Express Lanes open. Drivers are reminded to slow down, stay alert and pay attention to lane markings, traffic signal timing and roadway signs at all times.
Beginning on or about Jan. 24, drivers exiting I-66 West to southbound Route 123 will use a new exit ramp and two left-turn lanes at a temporary traffic signal. Drivers exiting I-66 West to northbound Route 123 will be shifted to a new permanent ramp.
