New Bridge on Route 50 West Over I-66 Scheduled to Open On or About This Saturday, June 26
Westbound traffic on Route 50 shifts to new bridge by Sunday morning, June 27; demolition of current bridge to begin Tuesday, June 29
UPDATE (6/29/2021): The ramp from Route 50 West to Fair Oaks Mall will reopen by 5 a.m. Wednesday, June 30.
FAIRFAX – Traffic on westbound Route 50 will be shifted to a new bridge over I-66 during the overnight hours of Saturday night, June 26. This new, permanent bridge is aligned slightly east of the existing Route 50 West bridge over I-66, and is the first of two upcoming traffic shifts at Route 50 and I-66, as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. Eastbound traffic will be shifted to a new Route 50 East bridge in the coming weeks.
Following this weekend’s traffic shift, the current Route 50 West Bridge over I-66 will be demolished beginning on or about Tuesday, June 29, to allow construction of new ramps. Bridge demolition will occur during daytime hours, when possible, except when demolition occurs overtop I-66, and must be completed during nighttime hours when I-66 travel lanes can be closed.
What drivers can expect this weekend:
Ramp closure from Route 50 West to I-66 West
- Around 11 p.m. Friday, June 25, the ramp from westbound Route 50 to I-66 West will be closed for crews to place asphalt to tie the ramp into the new alignment of Route 50 West. Drivers will be detoured farther west to West Ox Road South, stay to the right to Route 50 East, then follow signs to I-66 West.
- The ramp will reopen by 7 a.m. Sunday, June 27, shortly after opening of the new bridge.
Ramp closure from Route 50 West to Fair Oaks Mall
- Around 10 p.m. Saturday, June 26, the ramp from westbound Route 50 to Fair Oaks Mall will be closed for crews to place asphalt to tie the ramp into the new alignment of Route 50 West. Drivers will be detoured farther west to West Ox Road South, stay to the right to Route 50 East, then turn right into one of the two entrances into the Fair Oaks Mall property.
- The ramp will reopen by 5 a.m. Tuesday, June 29.
All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement conditions occur.
Drivers traveling through the Route 50 and I-66 interchange should be alert for changing traffic patterns, and are reminded to slow down and pay attention to lane markings and roadway signs. Construction-related detours and traffic pattern changes will continue through 2022.
The future reconstructed Route 50 and I-66 interchange will provide direct express lanes access to and from the east. A new shared-use path through the interchange will provide connection between Random Hills Park and Fairfax Corner with Fairfax Farms Road and points to the east and west along the new I-66 corridor trail.
