Detour in place due to work related to I-66 widening

GAINESVILLE – The Virginia Department of Transportation will close Catharpin Road to through traffic between Route 55 and Legend Drive from 6 a.m. Tuesday, August 2 to noon Friday, August 5 due to construction activities related to the I-66 widening project.

Through traffic will be detoured via Route 55, Route 29 and Heathcote Boulevard back to Catharpin Road. Detour signage and message boards alerting motorists to the closure will be in place.

Residents and businesses along the closed portion of Catharpin Road and emergency vehicles will still have access to the closure area, but will not be able to pass through the work site.

VDOT will monitor traffic and make adjustments as necessary to keep traffic moving.

The I-66 widening project will add one regular and one HOV lane in each direction from Route 29 in Gainesville to Route 15 in Haymarket. The $65 million project is scheduled for completion later this summer.

The adjacent I-66 and Route 15 diverging-diamond interchange project is scheduled for completion in fall 2017.
