Want to learn more about the walking and bicycling conditions in the area around your school? Walkabout Mini-grant recipients receive a hands-on walking and bicycling infrastructure assessment and written Walkabout Report coordinated by the Local Technical Assistance Coordinator serving their region.

The Walkabout is an excellent opportunity for community stakeholders to experience pedestrian and bicycle conditions, share perspectives, and build consensus around potential solutions. The Walkabout Report will include descriptions and photos of the conditions observed during the Walkabout. Recommended infrastructure improvements may also be included in the report, if the applicant intends to apply for a specific funding opportunity.

Important Dates

Applications for Walkabout Mini-grants are accepted twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring, with one Walkabout Mini-grant awarded per cycle. The due dates for the 2019-2020 school year are September 12, 2019 and February 6, 2020. 

Walkabout reports are designed to support subsequent infrastructure grant applications, such as the Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside grants. These grants are administered by VDOT's Local Assistance Division, with the next application period anticipated in fall 2019. More information on these infrastructure grants can be found here.

Who can apply for a Walkabout Mini-grant?

The entities who may apply for funding include:

  • Schools (public and private)
  • School divisions
  • Local governments (cities, counties, or towns)
  • Regional and state agencies working on behalf of a school or schools
  • Non-profit 501(c)(3) organizations working on behalf of a school or schools

At the Walkbout itself, representatives from as many of the above organizations as possible should be represented to gain a holistic understanding of barriers to walking and biking to school, and community-wide buy-in to help address them.
