Piedmont Avenue Bridge Investment Program Grant
What's Being Done?
VDOT is seeking federal grant funding (Infrastructure Investment Jobs Act (IIJA) funds) to replace the Piedmont Avenue Bridge in Bristol.
The Piedmont Avenue Bridge is in the City of Bristol and carries Piedmont Avenue over Beaver Creek through downtown Bristol. The portion of Piedmont Avenue between Goode Street and Cumberland Street serves as a Virginia Access Highway designated Surface Transportation Assistance Act (STAA) truck route despite its current weight posting. The bridge structure originates where Beaver Creek flows beneath Piedmont Avenue, north of the intersection of Sycamore Street and Piedmont Avenue, then traverses south along Piedmont Avenue before crossing the state line and becoming a City of Bristol, Tenn., structure at the intersection of Piedmont Avenue/7th Street and State Street.
Piedmont Avenue carries more than 11,000 vehicles per day.
The current bridge is nearing the end of its service life and significant investments are required to replace the structure. The project will replace a bridge that is nearing the end of its service life and enhance connectivity along and across Piedmont Avenue in Bristol to meet the transportation needs of all users in the area.
