Emergency Bridge Closure and Detour
A bridge on Route 606 (Stonewall Jackson Road) in Caroline County over the Poni River was closed to traffic on Friday, Feb. 27, 2015, after a bridge inspection that day found severe deterioration in the bridge beams.
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) determined the bridge should be closed as soon as possible for motorist safety.
Emergency detour signs were posted along the route immediately, but more than 100 detour signs were created specifically for this detour route, and are being posted starting Monday, March 9.
Click Here to view the detour route map.
Motorists should follow posted signs along the recommended detour route, which can be used by trucks and passenger vehicles:
• Route 609 (Macedonia Road)
• Route 668 (Long Branch Road)
• Route 608 (Massaponax Church Road)
• Route 1 (Jefferson Davis Highway)
• Route 606 (Stonewall Jackson Road)
Bridge Repair and Schedule
Prior to the bridge closure, a project was under design to replace the bridge's superstructure. Construction is scheduled to begin in January 2016, with work completed in June 2016.
Due to the closure, VDOT is working to accelerate this project. VDOT staff is performing required environmental review work now, and the project's design firm is finishing plans.
VDOT will announce information on the repair schedule in mid-March. Updated information will be posted on this project page, and will be shared with area media outlets.
Bridge Background
The bridge was built in 1962, and is structurally deficient. The bridge is inspected annually. It is a concrete pre-stressed box beam. The bridge is 160 feet long, and 28 feet wide.
Approximately 1,900 vehicles a day cross the bridge, according to a VDOT traffic count.
Additional information about VDOT’s bridge inspection program and individual bridge conditions are posted online at:
