Construction is underway to build a replacement bridge on Route 658 (Mount Olive Road) over the North Anna River, which will restore connection between Hanover County and Spotsylvania County.
The project replaces the current bridge over the North Anna River, which was closed for motorist safety in March 2015 after a routine bridge inspection found cracking in key support elements.
The $2.8 million project is being funded with State of Good Repair funds, which are targeted at improving or replacing structurally deficient bridges across Virginia.
The project schedule has been extended beyond the original completion date of December 20, 2018.
Weather permitting, the road is now expected to reopen in summer 2019. Once construction of the new bridge is closer to completion, a specific opening date will be announced.
The bridge deck width will be expanded from 13 feet to 21.8 feet wide. The structure has been engineered to withstand increased water pressure that occurs when water flows into river from the opening of the North Anna dam, which assists with cooling at the North Anna Power Station.
The current detour route will remain in place until the new bridge opens.
Approximately 580 vehicles a day crossed the bridge when it was open, according to a 2015 VDOT traffic count.
