This project will widen about a half-mile of Spring Street from four to six lanes from just west of Herndon Parkway to Fairfax County Parkway.
Other improvements include:
- Additional turn lanes on Spring Street and Herndon Parkway.
- Improving sidewalks on both sides of Spring Street.
- Adding to northbound Herndon Parkway a sidewalk as well as a cycle track, which combines the user experience of a separated path with the on-street infrastructure of a conventional bike lane.
- Replacing the sidewalk along southbound Herndon Parkway.
Within the project limits, Spring Street averages about 38,000 vehicles a day and Herndon Parkway averages 18,000 based on 2019 data.
Estimated Costs
Preliminary Engineering - $2.2 million
Right of Way Acquisition and Utility Relocation - $8.8 million
Construction - $9.3 million
Total: $20.2 million
This project is financed with federal, state (including Smart Scale and Revenue Sharing funding) and local funding.
Benefits
This project aims to improves safety, operations and connectivity for drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians.
