This project improves traffic operational features of the Route 50 intersection with Independence Drive in Frederick County. Improvements included a new traffic signal serving Route 50 and Independence Drive, new turn lanes, improved surface drainage and replacement of a deteriorated culvert across Route 50. This work served traffic from the Route 50 westbound left-turn lane onto Independence Drive, traffic on the Independence Drive approach, and prepared the intersection for the proposed Constitution Drive to the north.
Construction of this intersection project was in coordination with new commercial site development on both sides of Route 50.
Motorists benefit from the project at the Route 50 and Independence Drive intersection. This project improves the intersection’s ability to handle travelers accessing Independence Drive and Constitution Drive as a result of new commercial development in this area.
